The Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers is a medieval castle located in the middle of a wood near the village of Les Trois-Moutiers, in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. The castle dates back to the thirteenth century, when it was the stronghold of the Bauçay family, directly dependent of the King of France. During the Middle Ages it was conquered twice by the English, and then became one of the most famous places for sumptuous parties and vast events. During the French Revolution it was sacked and abandoned, but at the beginning of the XIX Century it was restored and enlarged until, in 1870, it was rebuilt to resemble the romantic style of the Loire Valley castles. In 1932 Baron Lejeune Edgar had central heat installed, but shortly thereafter a terrible fire destroyed almost the entire building, including an entire library of old books, wall hangings, antique furniture and precious paintings collected over centuries of history. The Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers became a ruin, and nature began to invade those historic walls that were the scene of centuries of great history. In 1981 the castle was bought by Marc Demeyer, a French teacher, who tried to restore it, without success. The land around the building was purchased by Crédit Lyonnais, and sold in separate lots. On some French newspapers, the hypothesis was put forward that the same financial institution had prevented the restoration of the castle, for purposes that are not yet completely clear.
