1789 👉🏼 James Madison introduces a proposed Bill of Rights in the US House of Representatives.
The Bill of Rights is the term used for the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States. The debate over ratifying and drafting the Constitution was bitter and many Americans had actually opposed the new form of government, particularly after a pamphlet written by George Mason was circulated, an Anti-Federalist who believed any constitution should have a bill of rights. Others, like James Madison, disagreed, saying it was unnecessary as the government only had powers as specified by the Constitution.
After the ratification of the state of Massachusetts was put in doubt over the objections of the Anti-Federalists, the Federalists agreed to consider amendments related to a bill of rights. Though James Madison was originally a staunch opponent of the bill, in order to secure the Constitution’s ratification and realizing the importance that citizens put on the bill, he put an amendment through Congress. The Senate changed the bill to include 12 amendments rather than 17, and later 10 were passed and ratified: the Bill of Rights.
Famous amendments include the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances“, often invoked in debates about free speech, and the Second Amendment: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” always invoked in arguments about gun control?

1869 👉🏼 Ives W. McGaffey of Chicago patents the 1st vacuum cleaner, calls it a “sweeping machine”

1942 👉🏼 Bing Crosby records “Silent Night”.
He was probably the biggest star of the first half of the 20th Century, and the best-selling recording artist ever with sales of over half a billion records in circulation. His single “White Christmas (1941) is still the best-selling single of all time. In addition to “White Christmas” three other of his songs have also been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, “Swinging on a Star”, Pennies from Heaven” and “Don’t Fence Me In”. He also became a major Hollywood star winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion picture “Going My Way”. He also appeared in seven successful “The Road to” films with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour.

1944 👉🏼 The 2nd Lt. Charles McDaniel, and his copilot, Navy ensign John Withrow crashed into the Badin Lake, North Carolina. The B-25 Mitchell bomber, apparently, lies still in the lake.

1948 👉🏼 First Porsche completed.
On this day, a hand-built aluminum prototype labeled “No. 1″ becomes the first vehicle to bear the name of one of the world’s leading luxury car manufacturers: Porsche.
The Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche debuted his first design at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900. The electric vehicle set several Austrian land-speed records, reaching more than 35 mph and earning international acclaim for the young engineer.

1984 👉🏼 “Ghostbusters”, American supernatural comedy film, directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, starring Bill Murrary and Dan Aykroyd is released 🎥
1987 👉🏼 New Zealand’s Labour government legislates against nuclear weapons and nuclear powered vessels in NZ. Only nation to legislate against nuclear power.

1989 👉🏼 Albert Spaggiari dies on this day, leaving no clue as to the whereabouts of the stolen millions during France’s biggest-ever bank robbery.
