1875 👉🏼 Captain Matthew Webb makes the 1st observed and unassisted swim across the English Channel in 21 hours and 45 minutes.
At 10.41 on the morning of this day, 27-year-old Matthew Webb, exhausted and suffering from delirium, put his feet on the beach at Calais after he had been in the water nearly 22 hours. He had become the first person to swim across the Channel from England to France without any artificial aids.
His achievement was celebrated all over the world, It brought him instant fame and he received a hero’s welcome wherever he went.
1894 👉🏼 Japanese scientist Shibasaburo Kitasato discovers the infectious agent of the bubonic plague and publishes his findings in The Lancet.
1914 👉🏼 Germans burn Belgian town of Louvain.
Over the course of five days, beginning this day, German troops stationed in the Belgian village of Louvain during the opening month of World War I burn and loot much of the town, executing hundreds of civilians.
Located between Liege, the fortress town that saw heavy fighting during the first weeks of the German invasion, and the Belgian capital of Brussels, Louvain became the symbol, in the eyes of international public opinion, of the shockingly brutal nature of the German war machine.

1958 👉🏼 Momofuku Ando markets the first package of precooked instant noodles (Chikin Ramen).
Japanese company Nissin Foods were the first to invent the instant noodle in 1958. It was the company’s founder Taiwanese-Japanese inventor Momofuku Ando who came up with the idea of flash-frying precooked noodles to preserve them. At the time Ando was responding to the post-war food shortage problem in Japan.
Ando went on to invent the cup noodles in 1971, now popular worldwide.

1979 👉🏼 Hurricane David is born.
On this day, the storm that will become Hurricane David forms near Cape Verde off the African coast in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It would go on to devastate the island of Dominica, and then the Dominican Republic, killing 1,500 people.
