1504 ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Michelangeloโ€™s Statue of David is unveiled in Florence
Commissioned by the Duomo of Florence in 1501 as a symbol of the city, Michelangeloโ€™s Statue of David is regarded as the artistโ€™s and one of the periodโ€™s most important sculptural works. Standing five feet high and weighing over 5 tonnes it was carved from a single block of marble already rejected by other artists.
Michelangelo was only 26 when he began this work and unlike other artist he depicts David before his battle with Goliath and uses the contropposto pose to convey his subjectโ€™s pent-up energy before battle.
