For those who love the joy of lighting candles to provide warm, soft light as well as a delightful fragrance to their homes, especially in winter time, Candle Day is a beautiful way to usher in the cold season.
Typically celebrated on the first Saturday of December, it was founded by the American retail company, Bath & Body Works.
Originally owned by the Limited Brands, which also owns brands such as Victoria’s Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch, the first store in the Bath & Body Works chain was opened in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1990.
Selling products for the body, the company grew rapidly and now runs more than 2000 stores all over the world, 1600 of which are in the United States.
It is a brand that is particularly beloved for its amazing scents including Sweet Pea, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Cucumber Melon and Country Apple.
Because the season for Christmas and other winter holidays often includes gift-giving, and because candles make good gifts for everyone, Candle Day was started in 2013, but it’s also a great time to simply stock up on candles for the cold, winter months.
However, candles has been around since the 16th century when they were used for both practical and decorative purposes.
People would use them for both practical lighting needs as well as for celebrations, holidays, and special occasions.
The original candle-making process was all about dipping a wick into a molten wax or oil, and dipped tallow candles were already common in the time of the Roman empire.
Over time, different civilisations would develop their own methods, yet, their main original purpose remained the same: to provide a convenient, reliable source of light for homes and places of worship.
In the Middle Ages “Chandlers”, as they were better known, could create large numbers of candles from tallow.
It was a thankless task in some respects because of the terrible smell of the manufacturing process. However, they were able to make a good living selling these candles to residents and other shopkeepers and, in the 13th century, the profession even became a popular craft also in England and France, that would later create the first candle mould in the 15th century.
Nowadays, candles can be found in almost every household, used for everything from aromatherapy to adding a special ambiance at dinner parties.
