1603 ππΌ Tokugawa Ieyasu is granted the title of shogun, officially establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate which would rule Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. He was also one of the three unifiers of Japan.
1664 ππΌ Theologian and colonist Roger Williams is granted a charter to colonize Rhode Island. An early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state, he founded the colony of Providence Plantation, which provided a refuge for religious minorities. He also started the first Baptist church in America.

He was the largest name in showbiz when he was conscripted in on this day, after a short extension to complete the film βKing Creoleβ. Against expectations he elected to serve a regular soldier and not in Special Services where he would just primarily perform for the troops.
Elvis Presley did his basic training in Fort Hood in Texas, living off base afterwards. His beloved mother Gladys took ill and died in August 1958, leaving him devastated. A month later he was attached to the 3rd Armored Division in Friedberg, West Germany, where he served the rest of his service, always under huge public scrutiny.
