1545 👉🏼 German Parliament opens in Worms 🇩🇪
1603 👉🏼 Scottish King James VI son of Mary Queen of Scots, becomes King James I of England in succession to Elizabeth I, thus joining the English and Scottish crowns 👑

1603 👉🏼 Tokugawa Ieyasu is granted the title of shogun, officially establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate which would rule Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. He was also one of the three unifiers of Japan.

1664 👉🏼 Theologian and colonist Roger Williams is granted a charter to colonize Rhode Island. An early proponent of religious freedom and the separation of church and state, he founded the colony of Providence Plantation, which provided a refuge for religious minorities. He also started the first Baptist church in America.

1824 👉🏼 1st performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis” in St. Petersburg 🇷🇺
1837 👉🏼 Canada gives its black citizens the right to vote 🇨🇦
1853 👉🏼 Anti-slavery newspaper “The Provincial Freeman” first published in Windsor, Ontario, edited by Samuel Ringgold Ward and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, first black woman publisher in North America.

1882 👉🏼 German scientist Robert Koch discovers and describes the tubercle bacillus which causes tuberculosis ( Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
He won in 1905 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine – tuberculosis, cholera, and anthrax.

1913 👉🏼 Netherlands soccer team’s 1st victory over England ⚽️
1944 👉🏼 RAF rear gunner Nicholas Alkemade survives a jump from his Lancaster bomber 18,000 feet over Germany without a parachute. His fall broken by pine trees and soft snow, suffers only a sprained leg 🦵

1958 👉🏼 Elvis Presley joins the army (serial number 53310761).
He was the largest name in showbiz when he was conscripted in on this day, after a short extension to complete the film “King Creole”. Against expectations he elected to serve a regular soldier and not in Special Services where he would just primarily perform for the troops.
Elvis Presley did his basic training in Fort Hood in Texas, living off base afterwards. His beloved mother Gladys took ill and died in August 1958, leaving him devastated. A month later he was attached to the 3rd Armored Division in Friedberg, West Germany, where he served the rest of his service, always under huge public scrutiny.

1976 👉🏼 Argentine President Isabel Martínez de Perón is deposed in a military coup.
1998 👉🏼 A tornado sweeps through Dantan in India killing 250 people and injuring 3000 others. 🌪
