Cumbres de Acultzingo, the mexican mountain road that requires drivers to drive on the wrong side of the road

3 min read

Tackling tight curves on winding mountain roads is complicated enough as it is…but having to even drive on the opposite side of the road makes it other problems!

Cumbres de Acultzingo, or Acultzingo Heights, is a mountainous area in the Mexico’s Veracruz State traversed by a winding road that truck drivers found notoriously hard to traverse due to its tight curves.
Because large vehicles couldn’t descend through some of these curves without going on the inside lane and causing frequent accidents, someone came up with the idea of switching up the lanes in these tricky sections.
And now, driving on the Serra de Acultzingo, as often the road is known, you constantly have to pay attention to the road markings and drive on the wrong side when asked to.
Set high in the Sierra Madre Oriental range, the road is totally paved and It’s called Ruta 150 (Tehuacan-Orizaba road).
For obvious reasons, It’s said to be the most dangerous highway in Veracruz state.

Before you need to perform the so-called “lane dance of Acultzingo”, you’ll see clear road signs that read “Opposite Curve Section Begins,” accompanied by markings on the asphalt pointing out that you need to switch to the opposite lane.
However, doing it in real-time and seeing vehicles coming from the opposite direction driving straight at you will make your heart race the first time you pass through this unusual road.
The lane changes usually coincide with the tightest curves on Serra de Acultzingo, making it easier for heavy vehicles to turn, and it seems the bizarre method has actually led to a decrease in car crashes on this road.
In fact, the peculiar line of the arrows indicating the lane change was made above all so that the longer trucks can make their line in a single movement, and this prevents them from getting stuck in a blind spot on the road. It also prevents vehicles that carry a lot of cargo from leaving the section and causing a serious accident.

The road features sharp curves and steep slopes, and a moment of distraction behind the wheel could be fatal. The driver must be very careful, since the tighter the curve, the less visibility ahead, so the lane must be changed shortly before starting the line.
If you are confused, it can be very dangerous.
Despite the system appears to work as intended, it is best to tackle the mountain curves of Acultzingo during the day, and at times when fog isn’t an issue, because visibility of the lane dance signs can be crucial.
Driving speeds on this winding road are usually very low but, either way, be careful, anyone should avoid a head-on-collision…
