Roughly the size of a studio apartment, the world’s largest passenger elevator weighs a whopping 16 tons, is supported by 9 steel cables, and can accommodate as many as up to 235 people at a time!
It is located inside the Jio World Center building in Mumbai, India, and it was installed in 2022 by Finnish elevator company KONE.
Designed to cater to large groups of people attending weddings or exhibitions at the state-of-the-art convention center, this marvel of design and engineering measures 25.78 square meters and offers all-round scenic views of the complex and its beautiful gardens.
Due to its enormous size, the world’s largest passenger elevator relies on an innovative pulley beam system that consists of 18 large pulleys, 9 steel cables, and rails fixed over steel columns.
Moreover, it features a unique four-panel glass door, but also glass walls that offer panoramic views, and a crystal-studded ceiling.
Although it only travels between five floors, at a speed of 1 meter per second, the record-breaking elevator also features two comfortable sofas for passengers to rest on.
“We are pleased to announce that the world’s largest passenger elevator is by Kone, and it is in India!” said Amit Gossain, Managing Director of KONE Elevators India.
“We pride ourselves in offering custom-built solutions for unique projects. Besides our India team, the company’s major project experts globally collaborated for design and delivered this most challenging and complex project.”
Kone is among the “Big Five” in the global elevator business alongside Thyssenkrupp, Otis, Schindler, and Mitsubishi.
But, according to Elevator World, it is in a league of their own when it comes to their testing facility, which hosts the world’s deepest elevator shaft, at -350 meters under Tytyri, Finland.
Yes, under. Because Kone HQ is in a skyscraper-free country where no building exceeds 131 meters, it had to go the other direction, conducting research underground in a limestone mine….
