Katy Perry turns 42: from Gospel singer to global Pop superstar

Katy Perry turns 42 on October 25, 2026, but her journey to pop stardom began long before I Kissed a Girl made her a household name.
Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California, in 1984, she grew up in a strict religious household: both her parents were pastors, and her early musical world revolved around gospel rather than mainstream pop.
In fact, she released her first album, Katy Hudson, in 2001, when she was still a teenager.
It was a Christian gospel record that attracted little attention, and her original record label soon went out of business. She eventually reinvented herself as Katy Perry, adopting her mother’s maiden name to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson. Her road to success was anything but straightforward, involving failed record deals, years of financial struggles and repeated setbacks before Capitol Records signed her in 2007.

Her breakthrough arrived in 2008 with One of the Boys and the provocative single I Kissed a Girl.
But it was 2010’s Teenage Dream that cemented her place in pop history. The album produced five US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles — California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) — matching a record previously achieved by Michael Jackson’s Bad. Few albums have captured the bright, extravagant spirit of early-2010s pop quite so completely.
Katy Perry’s talent for turning songs into spectacular visual events became part of her signature: her videos featured candy-coloured worlds, surreal costumes and playful humour, while her 2015 Super Bowl halftime show became an enduring pop-culture moment.
One of its unexpected stars was the now-famous Left Shark, a dancer in a blue shark costume whose slightly out-of-sync movements during Teenage Dream and California Gurls turned him into an internet sensation.
Her performance was watched by a record-setting audience for the time, but it was the imperfect shark that stole a surprising share of the attention.

There is another detail that makes her story particularly unusual: despite becoming one of the biggest pop stars of her generation, she has never received a Grammy Award, although she has earned 13 nominations.
In 2016, however, UNICEF honoured her with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award for her work as a Goodwill Ambassador supporting vulnerable children and young people.
Her career has also taken her well beyond the recording studio, from judging American Idol to returning to the stage with ambitious live productions.
And in 2025, she added an extraordinary experience to her biography by joining an all-female Blue Origin spaceflight, a brief journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere that brought together celebrity, spectacle and her long-standing fascination with the cosmos.
From a teenager singing gospel in California to an artist whose songs became anthems for millions, Katy Perry’s story has always been about reinvention. At 42, the woman behind Firework, Roar and Teenage Dream remains one of pop’s most recognisable figures — proof that sometimes the most colourful careers begin in the most unexpected places.
