Built in the 18th century, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaew, is situated in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Inside sits one of the most revered figurines in Thailand: the Emerald Buddha.
It is not known exactly where the figure originated but it is believed to have been found in northern Thailand around 1434. A legend tells the story that a monastery was struck by lightning in Chiang Rai and a monk found the statue. After moving around various sites in the country, it was moved to its present location on this day.
