Scallion Latte: unusual spring onion-infused coffee thats is al the rage in China
2 min read
There have been a lot of, let’s say interesting coffee combinations over the last few years, including the combination of orange juice and espresso or even watermelon juice and iced coffee.
However, the latest coffee concoction stretches credulity to its absolute max: from China, the scallion ice latte!

Well, spring onions and coffee definitely don’t sound made for each other, but spring onion-infused lattes are apparently all the rage these days.
It’s part of so-called ever-growing list of China’s “dark cuisine”, or “hei an liao li”, a food trend making unlikely pairings that literally challenge conventional notions of what is considered appealing. Other such coffee-related dark cuisine include oyster coffee, beef broth latte, chili-infused hot ice latte, coffee-infused rice, a soy sauce latte, as well as century eggs added to coffee.
A simple search for the #springonionlatte hashtag on the web will yield dozens of photos and videos with scallion-topped latte cups.
Apparently, to make a good green onion latte, you first have to mash scallions in the cup, then add ice, milk, and coffee, before finally topping it off with lots of chopped more scallions.
Either way, all the batshit ways you can mix coffee with some left field ingredient, the humble scallion may be one of the more sane, and It’s at least worth a shot.
No one knows exactly how, where, or when spring onion latte was created, but in recent months the crazy concoction seems to have been adopted by enough coffee shops.
Reactions to the spring onion latte have been mixed, which is to be expected, considering the strange duo.
Some people said that they had never thought they would one day have to ask for onion-free coffee, while others declared themselves intrigued by the unique latte, but worried about bad breath…
