Sven P. Andersson’s: the very rock that killed him marks his grave!
1 min read
At a cemetery in Malmö, in the very south of Sweden, a knee-high rounded rock marks a grave, with its Swedish inscription which states that a stonemason was “killed by this stone” on 22 June 1880 and ends simply: “Friends raised the stone. Beware, therefore, for ye know not, at what moment your Lord is coming”.
This is the grave of Sven Peter Andersson, and he was 46 when he died while helping move a heavy block from a barge at Malmö’s harbor.
However, when a crane chain snapped, the stone fell back and killed him instantly, leaving behind a wife and four children. His coworkers later recovered the rock and placed it above his grave in a quite macabre move.
If many older cemeteries contain gravestones that mention sudden or accidental deaths, few are as direct as this one, as it does not just represent death – it caused it!
