Kirk Hammett Takes an Unexpected Tumble During Metallica’s Dublin Show—Then Laughs It Off

3 min read

Live rock shows are unpredictable by nature, and sometimes even the most experienced musicians become part of the unexpected. That is exactly what happened during the first of Metallica’s two M72 World Tour concerts in Dublin, when legendary guitarist Kirk Hammett took an accidental fall that quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

The incident occurred while the band was performing one of its signature songs, “Seek & Destroy.” As Hammett moved across the massive circular stage—a defining feature of Metallica’s ambitious M72 production—he appeared to step onto a loose stage covering or protective sheet. The material shifted beneath his foot, causing him to lose his balance and tumble off the edge of the stage and toward the crowd.

Fortunately, the fall had no serious consequences. Fans positioned at the front helped cushion the guitarist, and within moments Hammett was back on his feet. Without any visible signs of injury, he climbed back onto the stage, picked up exactly where he had left off, and continued playing as if nothing had happened. The audience responded with loud cheers, turning what could have been a frightening incident into one of the night’s most memorable moments.

Videos captured by concertgoers quickly spread across social media, giving fans around the world multiple angles of the unexpected slip. As is often the case with Metallica performances, the online community reacted with a mixture of concern, relief, and plenty of humor.

No one embraced the joke more than Hammett himself.

Later, the guitarist posted about the incident on social media with the brilliantly self-deprecating caption “Slip & Destroy,” a playful twist on the title of the song the band was performing when the accident happened. The pun instantly resonated with Metallica fans, who appreciated the guitarist’s ability to laugh at himself rather than dramatize the situation.

The moment also highlighted one of the qualities that has made Kirk Hammett such a beloved figure throughout his more than four decades with Metallica. Despite being regarded as one of heavy metal’s most influential guitarists, Hammett has always maintained a down-to-earth personality and a sense of humor that resonates with fans. Rather than allowing the mishap to overshadow the performance, he transformed it into another memorable chapter in Metallica’s long history of unforgettable live moments.

The M72 World Tour itself has become one of the band’s most ambitious productions to date. Featuring a unique “No Repeat Weekend” format, each city hosts two concerts with completely different setlists and no repeated songs, giving dedicated fans a reason to attend both nights. Combined with the enormous in-the-round stage positioned at the center of the stadium, the production allows the band to perform closer to every section of the audience—but it also demands constant movement from the musicians across a vast performance space.

That level of mobility inevitably comes with challenges. Large-scale touring productions are incredibly complex, involving countless cables, ramps, stage coverings, and technical elements that crews meticulously manage before every performance. Even so, live concerts remain dynamic environments where unexpected moments can happen to anyone, regardless of experience.

Thankfully, this story had the best possible ending. Hammett escaped without injury, the concert continued uninterrupted, and fans witnessed yet another reminder that even rock legends are human. In true Metallica fashion, what could have been remembered as an accident instead became another iconic live story—complete with a perfectly timed joke that only made fans appreciate Kirk Hammett even more.

And somewhere in the countless fan-shot videos circulating online, you can still see the moment when “Seek & Destroy” briefly became “Slip & Destroy.”
