The curious story of the man who joined the search party looking for…himself

Sometimes reality produces stories so absurd that they sound like scenes from a comedy film. One of those stories unfolded in September 2021 near the town of İnegöl, in Turkey’s Bursa Province, where a routine search-and-rescue operation took an unforgettable turn after the missing man unknowingly joined the team searching for him.

The man at the center of the story was Beyhan Mutlu, a 50-year-old local resident. After spending an evening drinking with friends, Mutlu wandered away alone into the nearby forest. When he failed to return home and could no longer be reached, his worried family alerted the authorities, fearing he had become lost in the woods.
Police officers, gendarmerie units, and local volunteers quickly organized a search operation, combing the forest in hopes of finding him before the situation became more serious. Forest searches can be particularly dangerous, especially after dark, when visibility is limited and there is always the possibility that a missing person has been injured or become disoriented.
What no one realized was that Mutlu was still in the area.
At some point, he came across the very search party that had been assembled to find him. Believing the group was looking for someone else, he casually joined the volunteers and began walking alongside them through the forest, unknowingly taking part in the search for…himself.
For more than half an hour, rescuers repeatedly called out “Beyhan Mutlu!” as they searched the woods, while the man they were trying to locate walked only a few steps away.
The surreal misunderstanding finally came to an end when one of the volunteers shouted his full name once again. Only then did Mutlu realize that he was the person everyone had been searching for.
As later explained by Mutlu himself, he had actually spent the night sleeping in a nearby villa close to the construction site where he worked. After waking up and encountering the search team, he assumed they were looking for another missing person and simply joined them. Reflecting on the bizarre chain of events, he later told Turkish media, “It was all like a joke.”
Fortunately, the story had a happy ending. Mutlu was safely escorted home, and authorities did not file any charges against him. What could have become a serious missing-person case instead ended with relief, laughter, and one of the most remarkable misunderstandings ever reported.

The incident quickly made headlines around the world. News outlets across Europe, North America, and Asia picked up the story, while social media transformed it into an internet classic. Over time, some retellings simplified the ending, claiming that Mutlu responded, “I’m here,” the moment rescuers called his name. Although the exact dialogue has been embellished in many viral versions, the central story is entirely true: the missing man really did join the search party looking for him.
More than just an amusing anecdote, the incident also highlighted the dedication of the volunteers and emergency personnel who devote countless hours to helping strangers in distress. Their professionalism turned what could have been a dangerous situation into a harmless story with an unforgettable ending.
Nearly five years later, the tale of Beyhan Mutlu continues to resurface whenever people discuss the strangest true stories ever reported. It remains a perfect reminder that reality is often far stranger—and sometimes far funnier—than fiction. In the end, Mutlu didn’t just lose his way in the forest. He unknowingly helped rescue himself, becoming the only missing person who accidentally joined his own search party.
