1871 👉🏼 Henry Morton Stanley encounters David Livingstone at Ujiji, near Lake Tanganyika in Central Africa, with the immortal words ‘Dr Livingstone, I presume?’.
Henry Morton Stanley was a newspaper reporter who was hired by the New York Herald in 1871 to find the famous missionary and explorer, David Livingstone who had been missing for some time.
Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley reportedly asked the understated and subsequently immortal phrase, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”

1954 👉🏼 “Marine Corps War Memorial” unveiled in Arlington County, Virginia, dedicated to US Marine Corps who died in defense of US since 1775 (inspired by 1945 Iwo Jima photo of servicemen raising US flag).
In the United States the photograph below has become one of the most significant and recognizable images of World War II.
Later, it became the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication.
The image was used by Felix de Weldon in 1954 to sculpt the Marine Corps War Memorial located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington, D.C. The memorial is dedicated to all Marines who died for their country past and present.
